We all know about the menopause but what about the perimenopause the bit before the big one?

The one thing that is not talked about enough is that your periods become unpredictable.and how to manage this. What am I talking about? Well if previously you were as regular as clockwork you are now guessing when your next period is going show up. In order to manage this I recommend carrying around with you some sanitary protection and even better using reusable pads. Keep them in you purse folded up for those just in case moments so you are not caught short by a surprise visit by the period fairy!
The technical bit....
During this stage your periods will become more unpredictable as your level of oestrogen decline. It can last for several years before you eventually go through the menopause classed as when you have not had a period for 12 months. Perimenopause can begin as early as your mid thirties or as late as your mid 50s everyone is different (although the average is during your mid-40s). Although your fertility is declining you can still become pregnant during this time. It is also important to remember that the length of the perimenopause and the symptoms will vary from individual to individual. The average is around 4 years but it can be as short as a few months or last well beyond 4 years),
The main symptoms of perimenopause are:
Changes in the frequency of your periods longer or shorter cycles
Heavier or lighter periods
Sleep changes
Hot flushes
Mood swings and depression
Although the above are entirely normal if you are ever concerned/unable to tolerate or experience very heavy bleeding then seek medical advice.
