Did you know that like food makeup also has 'expiry' dates? Whilst most unopened and completely sealed makeup can last 2 or 3 years this changes once the seal is broken on it. Creamy formations particularly are at risk of expiring sooner so it is always important to check the packaging! Most beauty products will have a date or care instructions printed on them (but not all). The US food and drug administration recommends that once opened mascara for instance, should be thrown away after only 3 months. This is due to the liquid nature of the product and it's contact with the eyelashes that encourages bacteria growth in the product. As a general rule eyeliner and eye shadow should be replaced every six to 12 months, and lipstick every one and a half years. Meanwhile, the average expiry date for foundation, powder, and other facial makeup is around 12 months.
Obvious signs that makeup may well be past it's sell by date are when your mascara begins to get dried out or your eye shadow begins to fall apart! Look out for changes in texture and also funky smells especially true of out of date mascaras. Old makeup is a breeding ground for bacteria and cause at best spotty skin, irritated eyes or even conjunctivitis. There is even a name for the blemishes caused by cosmetics 'Acne cosmetica'.
If you were looking for an excuse to refresh your makeup collection then here is the perfect excuse!
